Happy National Drinking Straw Day

Marvin Stone patented the first paper straw in 1888 and it went into widescale production at his factory ‘Stone Industrial’ (now part of Precision products group) by 1890.

Throughout the 1960s, the manufacturing infrastructure to mass produce plastic straws was put into place.

I suspect, had Marvin Stone been alive today, he would be shocked to discover how our ‘improvements’ to his revolutionary invention have added to the widescale plastic pollution.

In the U.K., at least 4.4 billion straws are estimated to be thrown away annually; one study estimated as many as 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute the world's beaches. Eight million tons of plastic flow into the ocean every year, and straws comprise 0.025 percent of that. [National Geographic 2018]
